Saw your comment on the NBCsports.come site about Notre Dame. First, ND has not been irrelevant for 23 years. The IRISH were within a few plays of national championships through much of the Lou Holtz era in the nineties and made top ten appearances two or three times in the late nineties and a couple of times in the last ten years. Only in 2007 and 2008 did ND have embarassing late season declines and losing seasons. The IRISH were in BCS bowls in both 2006 and 2007 and came within a play of playing Texas for the 2006 for the national championship.
Second, ND gets a lot of coverage because they have a huge fan base! Whether you personally are screaming “Here come the IRISH!” on Saturday or not, no other school — except maybe Texas — has a fan base the size of Notre Dame. Notre Dame drives more clicks and more viewers than most other teams. This is less true today than ten years ago, but is still largely the case.
Third — stay tuned. With Brian Kelly, 2009 Home Depot National Coach of the Year, and an unequaled brand, facilities and budgets, there is every reason to believe that Notre Dame will post BCS competitive results going forward. This year’s team is generally regarded “top 15”, and will be favored to win every game but Stanford. Rather than pump the prospects, I’ll just say, tune in to NBC and see for yourself.
